Background of the Study
Political slogans are concise and impactful expressions that play a crucial role in election campaigns. In Nigeria, political slogans encapsulate ideological messages and serve as rallying cries to mobilize voter support. This study examines the semantic expression in Nigerian political slogans by comparing the language used across different election campaigns. It explores how political actors use metaphor, symbolism, and culturally resonant language to convey complex ideas succinctly (Ifeanyi, 2023). The research analyzes slogans from both established and emerging political parties, highlighting the interplay between traditional rhetoric and modern communication strategies. By comparing the semantic depth and clarity of slogans, the study seeks to identify patterns that contribute to their persuasive power and overall effectiveness in influencing public opinion (Obi, 2024). The findings aim to provide insights into how semantic choices in political messaging reflect broader sociopolitical trends in Nigeria and offer recommendations for enhancing the clarity and impact of future slogans (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant role of political slogans in Nigerian elections, there is limited systematic analysis of their semantic expression. Variations in language, symbolism, and cultural references can lead to ambiguous slogans that may fail to resonate with voters (Ifeanyi, 2023). The absence of a comparative framework to evaluate semantic clarity and effectiveness hinders political strategists from optimizing their messaging. This research addresses the gap by analyzing and comparing slogans from different election campaigns, thereby revealing how semantic choices impact political persuasion and voter engagement (Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze the semantic features of Nigerian political slogans.
To compare slogans across different election campaigns.
To recommend strategies for enhancing semantic clarity and impact.
